Coldplay - "Charlie Brown"

This was almost the song my best friend walked down the aisle to, and the band I do not understand her obsession with.

Nonetheless, it is her birthday, and I want to honor her somehow. So what better way then sucking it up and posting this? :) Kidding, kidding - I do enjoy this song a lot, and love her.

Happy birthday Jess!!

In my scarecrow dreams
When they smash my heart into smithereens
Be a bright red rose come bursting the concrete

Be a cartoon heart
Light a fire a fire a spark
Light a fire a flame in my heart
We'll run wild
We'll be glowing in the dark

Beyonce - "Best Thing I Never Had"

I saw Beyonce live for the first time last night, with Jay Z (who I saw at Bonnaroo a few years back), and wow, talk about an epic summer show. Basically, these two created a whole movie/live show. Though the songs loosely tied it all together, there was never a dull moment, and it went from their fake life of being gangsters to their real life of being parents. It was fun and sweet and everything you could want out of such a big name show. Really fantastic, and really worth all of the insanity of traveling and ticket prices!

This is actually one of the few songs that weren't performed last night, but one of my favorite from Queen Bey. Hope y'all enjoy it too, and have enjoyed your long weekend!

Thank God you blew it
I thank God I dodged the bullet
I'm so over you
So, baby, good lookin' out

I won't let you back
I'm so through with that
'Cause honestly you turned out to be the (best thing I never had)
You turned out to be the (best thing I never had)
And I'm gonna always be the (best thing you never had)
Oh yeah, I bet it sucks to be you right now

Martina McBride - "Independence Day"

This is, by far, one of my favorite freedom songs, both patriotically and personally. Hope y'all enjoy it too! Even if the weather outside isn't exactly screaming happy summer holiday...

Happy 4th of July!!

Let freedom ring, let the white dove sing
Let the whole world know that today is a day of reckoning
Let the weak be strong, let the right be wrong
Roll the stone away, let the guilty pay, it's Independence Day

Dionne Warwick, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, and Gladys Knight - "That's What Friends Are For"

Oh what a classic. Though it was the top song of 1986, did you know it was recorded by Rod Stewart originally in 1982? So this is a cover - that's wild!

This was a charity song, made for the American Foundation for AIDS Research, and it raised over $3 Million for the cause. The song also won a Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, as well as Song of the Year. Whew.

Keep smiling, keep shining
Knowing you can always count on me, for sure
That's what friends are for
For good times and bad times
I'll be on your side forever more
That's what friends are for

Beat Connection - "Palace Garden, 4 Am"

I'm trying to find the right words to describe the vibe of today's recommended song, and nothing seems to be just perfect enough. There's a groove of dance happening, but the catchy-ness isn't inherent in the beat as much as the flow of the words. And while I don't care for a lot of today's awkward and loud attempts at electronic music, there's a base of actual knowledge of how rhythms are supposed to work here that's usually lacking.

My new cube-mate, Colleen, recommended this one, saying "It's nothing new - from 2012, but it gets stuck in my head at least once a week. I saw Beat Connection open for Starfucker right when their album dropped and have been a fan since." Awesome back story, and I get the sentiment completely. Further proof we can all be happy and expand our horizons!
Palace Garden at 4am
She is under my arm, I am under her skin
In an attempt to seal the deal
Step away for a minute, let the tension build

You glimmer in the light
Moving to the rhythm of a summer night
Best believe that it's old news
Take me to the river, let me show you

Take me when you go, no one has to know
A shimmer in the night is all I needed
