So, if you didn't know, WWE owes a ton of its heritage to New York City, hence the choice of "Coming Home" as this year's theme song. It's really exciting to have the grandest event of them all come bak to our area, and I'm so beyond thrilled to be attending. This year's promos have featured folks in different areas of the city, holding screens with videos of the wrestlers of them. It's really kind of cool to show that the WWE is a part of life up here. Maybe not for everyone, but it is a littlee heart warming to me.
I am going to see Puff Daddy in a week. He'll be performing this at the Met Life center next weekend. Welcome to WWE week folks! This time next week I'll be coming home from the 2013 Hall of Fame Ceremony and getting ready for Wrestlemania! To kick things off, today's song is the wrestler theme song for Brock Lesner from WWE Music, "Next Big Thing." I do this at the request of my friend and fellow Wrestlemania-goer, Dina. However, you have to give credit where it's due. This really is a pumped-up wrestler's theme song. If you ever watch Brock enter from the ramp, he's already on his toes during this music, getting ready to get into the ring and tear someone apart. While I may not be rooting for him next Sunday (HHH 4eva), I'm looking forward to this music hitting live! While this may seem like more of a Thanksgiving sentiment, I'm really very happy to be going home this weekend for the holiday. I'm currently at work, trying not to count the hours down in fear that they'll go slower. See, I think what's starting to scare me is that New York is becoming what Nashville did when my life became insane with Thesis work and little-to-no enjoyment of my final semester in my second city - a stressful mess. Hence why an (albeit short) weekend home is a welcome thing right now. It'll be busy with family and friends and trying to accomplish too much in too little time, but I can't wait. Today's one of those that I turn to the nearest person to me (in this case, my PA) and ask "What's the song of the day?" Today, Myles said Neutral Milk Hotel. While I can't say I absolutely love the song, it's something different and individual, so I can appreciate it. No matter how incredibly twisted the lyrics may seem after further inspections... Check it out and let me know your thoughts. Hey, when it's your blog you can pick the songs you want. Between talking to Meg about this artist and the last stabbing comment I heard before heading to work, this is was bound to come up. I hated this song when I first heard it, as I actually tend to do with most P!nk songs, but once again it grew on me. I blame "Glee" in particular for making Marley & Unique's audition song for "Grease" just so damn lovable. Regardless, this one's about being over it and becoming yourself. As I walked away from a comment made to dig at my lack of music industry involvement career-wise (at the moment), this started playing. The sweeping realization that I don't need the bullshit is what drove me listen to it two more times on the subway. The music is what led me to start bopping my head and getting into it physically. The power is what's kept key lyrics playing in my mind all day long.
Ever have that morning when Pandora loads just enough for you to enjoy an entire awesome song before the connection cuts out in the subway? Maybe that's just me. But today it was "Memory." Rarely do I let it show on my face just how great what I'm listening to is (come on, I'm a New Yorker - have to keep that steely face to make it through the crowds without bother), but I basically danced my way to the Q this morning. It's not a pop song, but it's not one that hits too hard either. Just right for some reason, and the subject matter isn't all that happy either. It's asking someone if you can be their memory, though the thought or occurrence may never actually happen. But the memories and feelings that go with them are so very much. And to think, I almost changed the station as this song came on. Well it's Monday again, and if you're anything like me you desperately need something to get your heart rate up and happy. Today, "Faster" put an extra hop in my step as I drudged along the sad looking sidewalks of Queens on my way in to work. It's just ridiculously happy and lovely. I also have a duet version of this worked up in my head, complete with a very "Bye Bye Birdie"-esq video, but that's just a glimpse into my musical imagination. Today found me wandering Brooklyn with two friends, looking for set dec pieces for one of their upcoming projects. As we walked, we also talked about getting some space and having a place to make our dreams come true. I most definitely had many "I live in New York, holy crap" moments throughout the day, and lots of time of reflection as we walked through the quiet-er streets of Brooklyn's Gawnus area. As I end my night now, this song hangs on my heart the way it did the first time I heard it a little over a year ago when a friend of mine moved to Brooklyn and our relationship was just about doomed to change. This song is so beautiful and heartbreaking all at once, so I deem it appropriate for every time I visit the borough.
I have to admit, I actually got hooked on this one from the "Grey's Anatomy" musical episode. I had to look up who the original singer was before putting this post together. But it's Brandi Carlile, so come on, obviously it's amazing. It is, quite simply, an eternal love song. The breakdown in the music alone, where the whole thing turns into a rock song? Perfection. This is Kelly's latest single, and while musically it's a lot like everything she's been putting out lately, this is the queen of feel-good girl songs in the past few years. I think she's got something both powerful and uplifting here. Check out the second verse:
This is an anthem and a way of moving on, which Kelly always seems to bring around right when its needed. She's so happy with her life now, according to interviews at least, and this is her expression of it. We should all be so glad to shuf off the bad in |
