Bastille - "Pompeii"

This is oddly a really great song, kind of deserving of its chart-topping status. It's a little sad sometimes, if you get into that head space of a nostalgic thought pattern. But, if you can draw strength from it, I think there's something sort of brilliant hidden there in the lyrics. And if you tell me you can't loose yourself in the sound itself, you're just crazy.
We were caught up and lost in all of our vices
In your pose as the dust settled around us

And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Great clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above

But if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all?

Let me give y'all a little insight as to how I approach these things: at the beginning of each month, I create a calendar and lay out as much as the SOTD selections as I can. This include New Music Tuesdays, who from work will select something on Wednesdays, Throwback Thursdays, Country Fridays, etc. etc. etc. So when I selected Cole Swindell a while back for this Friday, "Chillin'" it was still relatively unknown.

Now, I'd be shocked if you hadn't heard this (well, if you listen to today's country at all, that is).

Hope you're chillin' this weekend!
I got my shades on, top back,
Rolling with the music jacked,
One on the wheel, one around you baby
Sunset
I bet
There's a chance we can get
Sure enough
Tangled up,
Laid back and lazy

Pour it on easy now, don't spill a bit
Nothin' but time tonight, let's get to killing it
Long as I'm rocking with you, girl
You know I'm cool with just chillin' it

The Bangles - "Walk Like An Egyptian"

THROWBACK THURSDAY!!

Let me just tell you, sitting here with one of my best friends, eating crepes, chilling out in my kitchen, and reminiscing about an evening of sushi and book store shopping... I'm just a happy, relaxed chick right now. And this is plain ol' fun. Way to go 1987. :)

Also, this lyrics - heh. Happy last day of school to some New Yorker kids and teachers out there!

All the school kids so sick of books,
They like the punk and the metal band.
When the buzzer rings,
They're walking like an Egyptian.

Vacationer - "Trip"

A little late on this one, but the sentiment seems appropriate. I think this is about the right time of year for this feeling too - I mean, who doesn't want to get away?

Special thanks to my friend Devin for this selection. Clearly, we're all feeling it big time right now.

When you get into the lyrics, yeah, this is a little hard to swallow and might bring you down. But that's what the trip's for, right? Finding the happiness again? Sweet lord I hope so.

I need a fix
To put me to sleep
A permanent kick
The world's kicking me
The buzz isn't coming on
The buzz that has come and gone
Love's not coming through

Heaven is come and gone
Love's not coming through

Station - "Everything"

It's Tuesday, and that means I've got some good music to share that you probably haven't heard yet. Fools, all of you, until you start listening.

I mean that in the nicest way possible!! Y'all know how much I love my readers!

Anywhos, this week I want to share a friend's band with y'all. This is Station - the best live rock band I've seen in their area. Granted, they all have hair longer than mine, but they can throw it around like no one else. The music's incredible to boot, which is why I'm so excited that they just finished up their first full-length album! (We'll get that posted when it's all ready, no worries to you new fans I hope are being won over today.)

Check out this and more of their music, and most importantly, if they're touring anywhere remotely close to you (I'm giving you a 6-hour driving window here people), GO SEE THIS BAND.

Mastodon - "Blood and Thunder"

Given today, I'm glad Samie picked this one for this Wednesday's selection. It's like something boring into my head today, and it's not so much giving me a headache as just confusion and insanity. Well played m'dear.

I think that someone is trying to kill me
Infecting my blood and destroying my mind
No man of the flesh could ever stop me
The fight for this fish is a fight to the death

Maggie Chapman - "Unbreak"

Someone directed me to Maggie Chapman a little while back, and this is the first time I've gotten around to really hearing her. The vocals are airy and pleasant, with just a nice sweetness to them. She's got a very simple sound instrumentally, with an interesting layering of harmonies as the song goes on. Overall, someone to check out for sure for this little New Music Tuesday.

"Sugar Daddy" from "Hedqig and the Angry Itch"

Guys, this is the Neil Patrick Harris version. They've recorded an entire new cast album with him!

How am I alone in this glorious happy freak out about this?? No, I know - there's no way I'm alone here.

Anywhos, thought we'd feature the song he's been getting amazing write ups for the performance of from last Sunday's Tonys. Man, what a show!

Let me know below if you're going to see this, want to see it, or just are as in love with this gay man as I am!

Oh, the thrill of control
Like the rush of rock and roll
Is the sweetest taste I've known, oh yeah
If you've got some sugar bring it home

"Don't Forget Me" from "Smash"

Smash was my previous roommate's and mine's show. We considered it our guilty pleasure show, because it really, really had some low writing quality in a lot of moments. However, being brought up a Broadway bum and having a huge love of new performances of old songs, I had a soft spot for what the show created.

Also, the Tony's spot with all the cancelled shows was magic. Megan Hilty, you are wonderful!
But forget every man who I ever met,
Cause they all only live to control
For a kiss they'd pay a thousand
Yet they paid fifty cents for my soul.
They took their piece.
The price of fame,
That no one can repay
Ah but they didn't buy me,
When they
bought my name,
And that is why I pray.
That when you see some one's hurt and in need of a hand,
You don't forget me!
Or hear a melody crying from some baby grand,
Don't forget me!

Avicii - "Wake Me Up"

This was voted - yah know, by me - as the best song of 2013. Or at the very least the one that grabbed me the most. It's actually quite sad when you read into it, and if you could tip your head back and just fall asleep until better times come around, you might enjoy living the dream.

Anywhos, while I don't always agree with the concept - because you'd never learn that way - I no doubt adore this song with every fiber of my being. It's a thought that counts on this time around. Finding yourself when you don't realize you need to..
Feeling my way through the darkness
Guided by a beating heart
I can't tell where the journey will end
But I know where to start

They tell me I'm too young to understand
They say I'm caught up in a dream
Well life will pass me by if I don't open up my eyes
Well that's fine by me

So wake me up when it's all over
When I'm wiser and I'm older
All this time I was finding myself
And I didn't know I was lost
